Omnipresent, the King of change - 13” x 7” - oil on wood panel - 2009
Limited edition prints available at: Flatcolor Gallery
This is a classical portrait of Death as a king with a crown of candles, taken from Grimm’s fairytale “Godfather Death.” In early Germanic traditions Death was seen as the keeper of a vast hall of candles, each representing an individual life. As the candle burned, so your life changed, and upon the extinguishing of your particular flame, Death would make himself known and guide you to the afterlife.

Capacity for waiting - 40" x 16" - oil on canvas - 2009
*This was painted live at Artoleptic in Pioneer Square. The inspiration was “The six swans” from Grimm’s Fairytales. The plot structure was very much the same as “The seven ravens” (see Seven Corvi Sought), with the exception of an evil stepmother as the protagonist.326,800Price On Request -
The naming of Athens - 42” x 20” - oil on canvas - 2009
*In the mythological account of the naming of Athens, both Poseidon and Athena request to be the patron of the inhabitants of the land. The people where at a loss having worshiped both, and couldn’t pick. So each god presented a gift, Poseidon a spring, Athena an olive tree. Here she is represented with her aegis, spear, and the olive tree.282,600Price On Request -

Seven corgi sought - 18” x 38” - oil on canvas - 2009
*The Seven Ravens a story from the Grimm brothers was inspired by many fairytales from early Germanic lore. In the story, a peasant sends off his sons to retrieve healing/baptismal water for a young sister. The boys, unable to return, are cursed by the father and turned into crows. After many trials, tribulations and virtues the sister rescues them, and returns them to human form.600,173Price On Request -
Ein schlaues ruse - 36” x 14” - oil on canvas - 2009
*“The Robber Bridegroom,” “Bluebeard” and “The Feather Bird” by the Grimm Brothers follow the same basic story line, and all three provide inspiration for this painting. Three sisters, one by one, are kidnapped and forced into marriage or servitude with specific guidelines and dire consequences. The first two give into curiosity, and are killed or maimed by their abductor. The third displays discipline, resolve and wit—she not only restores her two sisters to health, she avenges their wrong doing, usually ending in the death of the protagonist. In the “Feather Bird,” the heroine disguises herself as an exotic bird to fool the wedding party and the evil sorcerer responsible for her family’s woes. In the end, the outwitted sorcerer and all of his friends are killed by the men of her family. For this painting, I decided to replace the disguise of the exotic bird with a murder of crows.

Athena Ergane: craft and stratagem - 34” x 14” - oil on canvas - 2009
*Athena Ergane is an epithet for the goddess Athena. Most commonly known as the warrior goddess, she is also the patron of craftsman and artisans, and had a complete command of manual skill and practical intelligence, such as ship building, sailing and weaving. She was also a master in the art of influence. For this particular painting, I decided to focus on the Ergane, the patron of craftsman and artisans. It is said that she was as brilliant as the armor she was covered in, and upon reading this, I was immediately reminded of a beautifully intricate necklace designed by Birna Sigurbjornsdottir. The necklace is designed to rest snugly against the neck, and drapes down the back in long cascades of interlinked silver rings in varying sizes, garnished here and there with semiprecious stones. It resembles a painstakingly assembled chainmail suited for the gods. I decided to forgo the classic portrayals of Athena standing victoriously complete with helmet, lance and aegis, and instead placed her showing her back to the viewer confident in her protection and cunning. I did, however, include her lance and the snake that is often viewed coiled around the bottom of it in the lower part of the painting.

Amalgamation - 18” x 10” - oil on canvas
*Funny, really…this painting has nothing to do with Aesop, the Brothers Grimm, or mythology…yet it is the title piece of the show. It was actually inspired by Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. To create a god or to be created by God is the dilemma of this novel. The plot explores creation, social hierarchy, the soul, the fundamentals of humanity as well as being human, and the questions posed by the created to the Creator. It is a mix of themes and battles on an epic scale, challenging one to choose sides between looking at the monster with complete scorn or sympathy. This vast collection of themes validated my desire to mix together the inspiration I gained from other things I was reading at the time (I tend to tackle multiple books at once). This led to the creation of the other paintings in this show and the title itself, Amalgamation.355,600Price On Request -

A desire to obtain - 40" x 28" - oil on canvas
*This painting was created for the 2010 Seattle Erotic Arts Festival; I was a guest artist selected by the curater Chris Crites.Statement: This painting is about the alluring nature and relationship between Life and Death. Life and Death are personified in a flirtatious holding pattern: never really allowed to attain one another, forever side by side, brushing against each other, whispering, teasing, longing for each other, yet still separate.
To me, it is eroticism at its finest. Originally I wanted to work with the theme of flirting with death; but then it struck me that Life and Death exist side by side with a compelling tension and electricity, simultaneously energized by close proximity and slight separation. Consider the millisecond of time between two sets of lips about to touch--senses alert to the warmth of another approaching body, dopamine alarms, bells, and whistles, alerting every square inch of your being of the impending reward associated with desired touch, about to happen, but not quite yet, almost, the excruciating anticipation. These two, Life and Death, are forever trapped in that moment.

A portrait of the artist as John L. Sullivan - 10" x 22" - oil on wood panel
*This is a piece that was created for D.C. area gallery, Art Whino's 2011 G-40 Summit.
John L. Sullivan, also known as the Boston Strong Boy is last heavyweight champion of bare-knuckle boxing back in the 1800's. He was the first American sports hero to become a national celebrity and the first American athlete to earn over one million dollars. With over 450 fights under his belt he is the stuff of legends. We bring back this legend 130 years later with the first group art show honoring this American icon. With over 40 artist interpretations of this figure, the representations of the lost art form of good ole bare-knuckle fighting will be diverse and always legendary.900,409Price On Request -
